Practice Does Not Make Perfect

Great Managers Are Made Not Born

Practice Does Not Makes Perfect

We have all heard the phrase, practice make perfect Right? Not right.

We hear that advice in so many areas. But think about it. Does that make any real sense?

I train speakers to be excellent, and what I hear when they come to me is, I was told to practice! Great! But it's like golfers who have a bad swing. If you keep practicing your bad swing what do you get? A bad golfer with an exceptional but still bad swing.

The first thing you have to do is learn the right way to do something.

Learn the right way to present your idea, to speak, to connect with your audience. Learn the right way to share a story and make Storytizing a huge part of your success. Learn how to share, move, connect, engage, involve your audience by telling them stories using their memories, their emotions, and their experiences.

Of course it's your story but talking about you is boring to most people unless you are an exceptional storyteller and let's face it, most people are not. That probably includes you.

And please don't rely on your friends to tell you the truth. They won't any more than you would and even if they wanted to say, wow, that was pretty boring, they wouldn't know how to help you fix it.
You never tell your boss that they are boring do you? Of course not. Almost no one does unless they are your speaking coach.

Once you learn how to be great at whatever you are doing, yes, practice. Then have your coach help you some more. Learn even more, improve, and practice some more. Rinse & repeat.

Practicing something that's not great leads you to be great at something that's not great. Find out how to be great and then practice and make sure you are practicing the right things!

That's when practice starts to pay off. Practice in the mirror but more, practice on your hone video. Record yourself over and over and send that you your coach so they can keep helping you get better.

In today's world you have to unlearn what you have learned in order to Learn what you must learn to be great.

You do want to be great, right?

What are you prepared to unlearn?
